St. George, UT – Betty Baker McDermott, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 29, 2017 after a short illness. She married William McDermott (Deceased), March 31, 1950 in Preston, ID.
Betty was raised in Cornish, UT where her favorite things in the world were her horses. She was an only child but had many friends which she has kept in touch with over the years. She attended college at Utah State University and had a Masters Degree in Education. She taught elementary school first in Preston, Idaho and then in Salt Lake City, Utah until her retirement in 1995. She was an excellent teacher and touched the lives of many children in her classes.
When the family was living in Preston, we had a chariot race horse and the favorite family thing to do was rise early on Saturday to go to the races. It is one of our favorite memories with her. One of her favorite hobbies was square dancing which she participated in for several years. Several years ago she moved to St. George, Utah in Sun River retirement community where she had many dear friends and was very involved in activities with them. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She will be deeply missed by all.
She is survived by Wendie (Michael) Nay and Debra Murphy (David)
As well as her dearly loved grandchildren: Susan Mahina (Tim) Rock, Brandon McDermott (Kinsley), Hema Tapa, Robert J. Murphy III, and Kayla Dawn Nay. She also has Five Great Grandchildren.
