Alva Rathman

May 21, 1946 — February 28, 2017


Alva (Al) Lynn Rathman, 70, St. George UT, passed away on February 28, 2017, after a long battle with renal cell cancer. He was born May 21, 1946, in Kankakee IL to John and Melva (Hendrix) Rathman. Al grew up in the small village (150 residents) of Buckingham IL. He graduated from Herscher High School, Kankakee Community College and Southern Illinois University.

Al served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 and was stationed in Berlin, Germany. He worked with several companies over the years, most significantly Arthur Andersen, CBS, IBM and Toll Packaging, which afforded him the opportunity to live in different cities across the country.

A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, Al was thrilled when the Cubbies won the 2016 World Series. Al enjoyed traveling (he made it to all 50 states), sports and golf. He was active in Rotary (where he was presented with the Paul Harris Fellow designation), American Legion and Elks.

Preceding Al in death were his parents; brother Ronald and sister-in-law Phyllis (Hammond); sister Dessa (Richard) Emerson. He is survived by his brother Dyrle (Carol); wife Rhondalon Crawford; son Eric (Catherine) and granddaughter Evelyn Dessa.
