Bessie Mitchell Cates, a long time resident of St. George passed away on Tuesday October 5, 2010 at her home at Red Cliffs Regional center from complications of pneumonia.

Bessie was born on Sept. 5, 1917 in Hinkley, Millard County Utah, daughter of Cleveland and Iva Stanworth Mitchell.

Bessie graduated from Delta High School and was in the drum and bugle club of Delta, Utah. She also was named as the Millard County beauty queen.

She and her family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in1950. She started working for the Hot Shoppes as a hostess for many years and then worked at ZCMI Tiffany Room.

Bessie & Ralph were members of the LDS church and were sealed in the Salt Lake City, Utah LDS temple.

She was very talented in her creative abilities. She made a lot of loop work, paintings and ceramics.

She won first place with her latch loop rug at the Utah State Fair. She also made many ceramic eagles for the Eagle Scout grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband Ralph Cates of 55 years, her brother Lawrence Mitchell & sister Mary Mitchell (Smith), and son Merriel C. Dewsnup.

Bessie is survived by her sons, Jerry W. Dewsnup (Deanna) of Sandy, Utah and Lawrence C. Dewsnup (Alecia) of Las Vegas Nevada. She has a large posterity of Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren who as well will miss their Grandmother.

Per Bessie's wishes she wanted a private viewing and will be interred at the Delta City cemetery at a later date, where she and her sweetheart will be laid to rest.
