Carl Woodruff

June 16, 1953 — April 14, 2021

St. George, Utah

On Wednesday, April 14, 2021, Carl Woodruff, loving husband, and father, passed away at the age of 67 in St. George, Utah. Carl was born on June 16, 1953 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Cal and Betty.

Carl grew up in various places. He lived in Nashville, Tennessee; Ann Harbor Michigan; Columbia, Missouri; and Beirut, Lebanon. While living in Tennessee he wandered the woods to see the beauty of God’s kingdom as a young boy. While living in Beirut, he was so thin that he could squeeze through the bars on the apartment balconies going from floor to floor in a 5-story high building, learned how to use a jackhammer, and loved to bend rebar on the highest levels of construction sites. His mother found out and asked the workers to make sure he worked at ground level. He got to travel to Egypt where he saw the pyramids and the valley of the Kings. Also, he visited the Eiffel Tower with parents and siblings during a month of camping across Europe.

Carl graduated from Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri, where he also attended several college classes. He joined the Navy to give his life some focus and structure where he trained to be in the nuclear power program. He attended boot camp in Florida. He served as an instructor at the INEL site in the Arco Desert near Idaho Falls, Idaho. He has an AS from Regents College of New York. He was a certified electrician. He received computer and software training from the Navy. While serving on a ship, he was asked to create a personnel directory by the commanding officer and received a special accommodation.

While in the Navy, Carl met his wife Shirley in the San Francisco Bay area. They were married for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls temple. They raised five boys: Dan, Dave, Ben, Mark, and Joe.

Carl was a Progress consultant where he was trained in Boston. He had the experience and knowledge of a graduate student in computers and was hired as such. He worked for a consulting firm in Dallas Texas called Analysis’s Express which took him to Florida, Connecticut, Atlanta, San Diego, India, and a few other locations. He was also a part owner of Yost Business Systems in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Carl was fun loving, a continual learner, and an avid do-it-yourself, and jack of all trades. He served others, had the heart of a kid, and loved to play with his grandchildren. He loved the outdoors where he often went camping with his family and friends. He spent many of his weekdays and weekends in the mountains on his ATVs. He was always trying get others to laugh with his unique sense of humor that made you think. He also loved to build things himself. He built a camper in the living room, an automated book scanner, and recently created 3D videos of his ATV adventures which can be found on Google Street ATV Trails in southern Utah and Arizona strip. He served everyone he could through his church, scout organizations, and astronomy club. Whenever he could, he was out and about with his grandchildren in all sorts of activities such as white-water rafting.

Carl was preceded in death by his father, Cal, and his mother, Betty. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his five children, Dan, Dave, Ben, Mark, and Joe; his sister, Ginny; his brother, Bill; his cousin, Rodhe; and most of his many grandchildren.
