Elizabeth Smith

November 24, 1919 — May 26, 2017

Elizabeth Barbara Smith, 97, passed away May 26th, 2017 in Hurricane, UT.  She was born Nov. 24th, 1919, in East Chicago, IN, to George and Elizabeth (Farkas) Kriston. The family later moved to Valparaiso, IN, where she graduated from high school. Upon graduation, she attended nurses' training at Mercy Hospital in Gary, IN.  Shortly after becoming an RN, she married Howard W. Smith in Valparaiso, IN, on Dec. 6th, 1941.

Betty, as she was known by family and friends, loved to sing, dance, paint, play bridge, do cross-word puzzles, and tend grandkids.  She spent her life active in the community, (Duluth, MN; Pueblo West, CO; Tooele, UT; and Ajo, AZ), in her church and choir, working as an RN, and raising 4 children.  She was loved by all who knew her!

Betty spent her last 8 years living at Heritage Home in Hurricane, as it became necessary to receive assistance.  We will forever be grateful for the loving staff that offered gentle care in her last days.  A special thanks to Sam Seymour, owner of Heritage Home, and his staff, especially Daniel, Martha, Sheila, and Tausha.  Her last year was spent on hospice by Alpha Home Care.  A special thanks to her nurses, Luke, Theresa, and her social worker, Carol.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 2 sisters and spouses (Helen and Bill Lightcap and Gazelle and Louis Pumroy) and 2 brothers and their spouses ( George and Helen Louise and Steve and Marge Kriston)

Surviving are 4 children: Liz Throne (CA), Richard (CO) Marcy Bigelow (Greg) UT, and H Bruce (OR) Surviving also are 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchilden.  We cannot forget to mention Betty's constant companion for the last 14 years...her precious Penny!  Mom was always a cat lover, and Penny was her friend to the end!

As per Betty's wishes, she was cremated by McMillan Mortuary in St. George.  No funeral service is planned, but a memorial service will take place in the near future.
