April 22, 1941 — October 23, 2023

Ivins, Utah

Evona Jo’an Smithson Greenwood, affectionately known as JoJo, passed away peacefully in the early morning of October 23, 2023, at the age of 82. She was born on April 22, 1941, to loving parents, Oscar Lee Smithson and Thelma Winnie Thompson in the serene woods and forests of the Trinity Alps of northern California.

Jo’an had a vibrant and adventurous childhood. With her beautiful red hair and an unyielding spirit, she embraced life with enthusiasm. Growing up amidst nature, she developed a deep love for animals, especially squirrels. She cherished her father's gray squirrel song, a melody that echoed through the trees and became a cherished memory of her youth. Jo’an's family shared a passion for music; she played the fiddle, mandolin, and danced, with her family’s band, creating harmonies that filled their home and community with joy.

At the age of 7, Jo’an met John Abel Greenwood for the first time, a meeting that would shape the course of her life in ways she could never have imagined.

As she grew older, Jo’an moved to San Francisco, where she embarked on a successful career in the banking industry. Through hard work and determination, she climbed the ranks, showcasing her intelligence and dedication. Fate intervened, reuniting her with John Abel Greenwood once more. Their shared history blossomed into love, leading to a move to Illinois, and finally to St. George, Utah, where they built a life together.

Throughout her life, Jo’an had a passion for sports, excelling in fast pitch softball, track and field, and soccer. Her competitive spirit and love for the game were unwavering. In addition to her athletic pursuits, she faced the challenges of cancer with remarkable bravery. Her courageous battle inspired all who knew her. Even in her illness, Jo’an continued to give back, donating the medal that she won that year in the Huntsman’s World Senior Games to her local cancer society, leaving a legacy of hope and resilience.

Jo'an lived a life deeply rooted in faith and love. Her unwavering devotion to her Savior was evident to all who knew her. Jo'an had a heart full of love and a spirit guided by her profound faith. She tirelessly shared her love for the gospel with everyone she met. Her passion for her faith touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She dedicated herself to various callings within her church, but her favorite was working with the children in the Primary. There, she found her true calling, helping those with special needs. With her special touch, she made a difference in the lives of these children, teaching them with love, patience, and acceptance.

But perhaps Jo’an's most enduring legacy was her love for people. She had an extraordinary ability to connect with others, and at her local grocery store, every worker knew JoJo. Her warm smile and genuine interest in people endeared her to all she met. May we remember Jo’an with the same warmth and love that she shared with us, cherishing the moments and memories that will forever live in our hearts.

She is survived by her husband John Abel Greenwood, her two sons Matthew (Gitta) Brewster and Theodore (Jennifer) Brewster. Granddaughter Brianna (Austin) Sutton and great grandchildren, Eli and Maya Sutton. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
