Frederick Raymond Thomas, Sr., 76, died July 10, 2025 in Pinto doing what he loved;,working for Snow Electric. He was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on May 18, 1949 to Yolanda Carmela Bruno and Frederick Clark Thomas. His grandmother, Grace Trombetta, came from Italy to the United States as an immigrant through Ellis Island. He was very proud of his Italian heritage. When he was five the family moved to the San Fernando Valley in California.
When Fred was a senior in high school, he deferred enlisted in the Marine Corps. After graduation, he went to boot camp in San Diego, California, then to Vietnam for almost a year. He was wounded and shipped back to the San Diego Naval Hospital with life threatening injuries. He was in the hospital for two years and then was given an honorable medical discharge. Fred was fiercely loyal to the U.S. Marine Corps. He was patriotic to this country and generous with his time serving friends and family daily. He proudly wore patriotic ties.
Fred loved his two grandchildren, Britan and Rhyslynn Thomas and spent quality time with them. Rhys waited for him to come home from work for his hug and stroll to the mailbox or work around the house. They had a mutual admiration relationship which buoyed him up especially when depression tried to take over. He and his grandchildren are bonded forever.
After receiving a degree from California State University, Los Angeles, Fred was employed by the California State Department of Corrections for 25 years., During that time, He ran a Fire Crew, was a Lieutenant, and Instructor, among other positions. He moved his family to St. George in 2001. He worked at numerous jobs here in Saint George, among them, Dixie College for ten years, Dixie Regional Medical Center, and Snow Electric at the time of his death, the job that he enjoyed the most.
Fred's father died when he was 15 and it left him with a broken heart. Years later he met Christie Lynn Coberly. Her father and Fred became very close. He taught him about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Fred was thrilled with the message that families could be together forever. He was baptized and Christie and Fred were married on March 14, 1970 and sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on April 12, 1971. Just a month ago Fred completed the temple work for his own father.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Christie, their children Frederick Raymond Jr., Daniel William and Kathrine Leigh Thomas, grandchildren, Cody and Hannah Johnston and Britan Clark and Rhyslynn Nikole Thomas, and two sisters Linda Koncel and Tami Ullerich in California.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 2:00pm in the St. George Sixth Ward, 449 South 300 East. A public viewing is not planned. Interment will be at Tonaquint Cemetery in Saint George, UT.
