He was born on May 11, 1931 in Cedar City, Utah to Jesse Nelson Pearce and Annetta Hammond. His father passed away in 1935 when Garry was 3 years old and 7 years later in 1942 his mother married Anthony (Tone) Foremaster.

Garry attended high school and Dixie Junior College graduating in 1949. After graduating he worked on his stepfather's ranch and several farms. Upon marrying JoAnn they moved to Astoria, Oregon where he worked as a mechanic fixing salmon fishing boats for about 2 years. After the birth of their son Merlin, they returned to St. George for a short time. They then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he started an apprentice plumbing program, ultimately working 15 years as a journeyman plumber.
