Hyrum S. Nelson, lately of Crosby, North Dakota, died on May 16, 2025, at the age of 82, due to unexpected health complications. However, his roots remained firmly planted in Utah's Dixie. He was born April 20, 1943 in St. George, Utah to Smith and Florence M. Nelson and lived his early life there. He graduated from Dixie High School, then entered military service in the St. George detachment of the 139th Special Forces, later serving in artillery units deployed to Viet Nam, Korea, and Germany.
After the military service he worked for many years at the Kaibab Lumber Company mill in Fredonia, Arizona, then moved to Alaska - a place he came to love - and finally to Crosby where he worked for the Dakota Missouri Valley and Western Railroad until his retirement in 2022.
Hyrum was preceded in death by his parents, and an older sister and brother, Velma and George William. He is survived by a sister, Elveen Gallamore of Hillsboro, Oregon, and a brother, Rodney Nelson of Hurricane, Utah.
Hyrum had no family of his own, and we extend our sincere gratitude to those, wherever he lived, who offered him friendship and inclusion. He was known for his gentle and kind manner. We will miss him, but know that welcoming arms were waiting to receive him at his death. He will be buried among family members in the Hurricane City Cemetery, Hurricane, UT, at graveside services on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 10:00am with military honors.
