Kunigunde Meister Black, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on February 8, 2026 while spending the holidays with family in Gilbert, AZ.
Gundi was born December 4, 1943 in Eckenreuth, Germany. She was one of four daughters born to Wilhelm and Kunigunde Meister. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in her teen years where she was given the responsibility of playing the piano for church services. She met her husband Lonn Kimball Black while in church in Nuremberg, Germany, where he was called to serve a mission for the LDS church. He was an American missionary from Pomona, California. Soon after serving his mission, Gundi came to America. Lonn and Gundi were married January 27, 1962 in St. George, Utah LDS Temple.
Gundi was a dedicated wife and mother to her four children Lisa, Launa, Steven and Sheila. She and Lonn raised their children in California, settling in San Diego, before returning to St. George, Utah in their retirement. She was active in the church and held many callings. Working with the young women was particularly rewarding and a favorite. She attended many piano and dance recitals, as well as many sporting events for her children.
Friends and family would tell you Gundi was a beautiful, kind, loving woman who had a great sense of humor. She worked many years in sales, spending the majority with Lifetouch Portrait Studios. There she won over school administration and students alike with her fun relatability and positivity. She and her friend Margaret would bake pumpkin bread and deliver the loaves to the schools dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.
Gundi found joy in playing the piano, crocheting blankets, baking treats and serving others. She loved visits from friends and family which always ended with a treat to take home. Her biggest joy in life was being a grandparent and great grandparent. She enjoyed each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren to the fullest, offering up many special memories for each of them.
Gundi is survived by her children: Lisa Black-Olson (Sharol) of Santa Clarita, CA, Launa Naylor (Dave) of Provo, UT, Steven Black (Lynda) of Del Mar, CA and Sheila Toolson (Troy) of Gilbert, AZ
Grandchildren: Anthony Black, Emma Black, Alyssia Black, Andrew Naylor, Chad Naylor, Cydne Holland, Cameron Black, Cody Black, Connor Toolson, Jake Toolson, Halle Willardsen and Anna Toolson and 18 great grandchildren.
