Larry Shurtliff

June 28, 1942 — June 6, 2016

Larry Richard Shurtliff, age 73, died June 6, 2016 in the St. George Spring Gardens Memory Care Center from Alzheimers disease. He was born on June 28, 1942 in Overton, Nevada to Carl Luman Shurtliff and Lydia Ellen Roesberry. He married Leona Brooks in the St. George Temple on September 8, 1962.

He was raised in Overton, Nevada where he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, and track. He was Moapa Valley’s Student Body President when he was a senior in High School.  He attended Dixie College on an athletic scholarship where he met his wife. They married just out of Junior College and both went on to Utah State University where they both graduated with Bachelor degrees. His first coaching job was at West Side High School in Dayton Idaho. He finished his Master’s degree at Utah State in 3 summers. His coaching took him to Lincoln County High School in Panaca, Nevada, Lehi High School, (where he worked on his Doctorate at BYU) and Spanish Fork High School. He got out of coaching for about 8 years when he first moved to Enterprise, Utah, but the coaching was too much in his blood, and he started coaching again when his 3 older boys were in High School.

He coached at Enterprise High School for 8 years and in the process won three consecutive Basketball Championships. He moved from there to SUU in Cedar City, and coached the Women’s basketball. He had two of his daughters play for him there, and won two American West Championships in a row.

He later also coached at Snow College, Women’s Basketball, where his daughter helped him coach. From there he served a senior mission with his wife in Independence, MO., and later a 6 month mission at Cove Fort in Utah. The last 9 years he has helped Larry B (his son) coach boys basketball at Enterprise High School, and they loved him as he loved them.

He served as a Bishop in the Enterprise 2nd Ward, and as a High Counselor and Stake Young Men’s President. Of all his callings in the church, his favorite was the 16-17 year old Sunday School Class. He loved Hunting and Fishing AND going to Alaska too.

He is survived by his wife, ALL of his children and their spouses. He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 siblings, David, Rose and Norma, and also two sweet grandchildren Shilo and Abby.

Funeral Services will be held June 11, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Enterprise, Utah Stake Center at 88 South Center. Visitation will be on Friday, June 10 at the Enterprise Stake Center from 6 – 8 PM and prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:45. Interment will be in the Enterprise City Cemetery under the direction of the McMillan Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Larry’s memory to the Enterprise City Park where an appropriate memorial will be made.
