Lyle LeGrand Wood, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026. He was born on December 14, 1936, in Garland, Utah, to LeGrand Willard Wood and Mamie Elizabeth Wise Wood.
Lyle spent many years serving in law enforcement in Utah and Idaho before beginning a career with Morton Thiokol Corporation, where he worked on the C-4 program. He retired at age 55 when the government contract ended. Ready to leave the snow and cold behind, Lyle told his wife, Judy, that it was time to move south. They settled first in a beautiful home in LaVerkin, Utah, and later moved to Washington, Utah, where they spent the past 20 years.
In Washington, Lyle and Judy built lasting friendships and enjoyed exploring the deserts, mountains, and scenic beauty of Southern Utah. Together with many friends, they formed a Tuesday lunch group that became a treasured part of their lives.
Lyle married Judith Hampshire Evans on March 23, 1972, in Blackfoot, Idaho. Ten years later, they were sealed in the Logan Utah Temple, a milestone that held great meaning for them both. Together they shared more than five decades of marriage, adventure, and companionship.
Lyle had a lifelong fascination with airplanes. He earned his pilot's license and spent many happy hours in the sky, enjoying the freedom and perspective that flying provided. Those who knew him often remarked on his unique ability to handle difficult situations with grace and diplomacy. As the saying went, Lyle could tell someone to go to hell and they would enjoy the trip.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judith Wood; his children, Cory Wood, Julie Barry, Marie Bright, William (Bill) Wood, and bonus son Gary Wood; his stepchildren, Scot Evans and Kristin Evans Christensen; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, LeGrand Willard Wood and Mamie Elizabeth Wise Wood; his infant sister, Marie; his brother, Lee J. Wood; and his sister, Launee.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the kindness and care shown to Lyle during his final days.
A private family memorial service and interment will be held at a future date at the Washington City Cemetery.
Lyle will be remembered for his steady presence, quick wit, love of flying, and the many friendships he built throughout his life.
