Melvin Joseph McFarland, age 96, of St George, Utah passed away peacefully on January 26, 2023, at his residence.
Mel was born July 7, 1926, in Casper, Wyoming to Harold and Elva McFarland. He grew up in Casper and eventually moved to Provo, UT after marrying Colleen Felker in the Salt Lake Temple in 1946. He would say marrying Colleen was the best thing he did in his life. Mel had a successful career as a welder and later as General Foreman for American Bridge at Geneva Steel in Provo. He also owned and operated the Mel McFarland Company, a steel erection company in Pleasant Grove, and completed many projects in Utah including the scoreboard at the LaVell Edwards Stadium. Mel resided in St George for the last 20 years. He was known for roaming the mountains around St George in his silver Escalade and getting in and out of seemingly impossible places. If you see his truck on the mountain side, it just might be his ghost!
Melvin was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was very generous and found joy in helping others. He loved sharing adventures with friends and family. In addition to his parents, Mel was preceded in death by his eternal companion, Colleen Felker, his brothers Harold Sherman McFarland, Thomas Poole McFarland, Ralph Howard McFarland, Robert Lee McFarland, and his sisters Ida May McFarland Hunzeker, Juanita Lucille McFarland, and Margaret Ann McFarland. Melvin is survived by his son Melvin David McFarland and wife Annette of Kennesaw, GA; daughter Rebecca Willard of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren Dane McFarland of Orem, UT, Spencer McFarland of Lehi, UT, Dana Fenstermaker of Salt Lake City, UT, Tamra Fenstermaker and husband Kevin Pendley of Albuquerque, NM; great-granddaughter Chandra Pendley of Albuquerque, NM; and sister Katy McFarland Cook of Plato, MO.
