Monte Paul Rugg passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, in St. George, Utah, at the age of 86. Born January 17, 1939, in Salt Lake City, Monte lived a full life marked by love, laughter, service, and unforgettable one-liners.
At 17, Monte joined the United States Air Force, serving proudly for four years in Germany and France. After returning home, he built a successful career as a painting contractor — known for his attention to detail, strong work ethic, and no-nonsense honesty.
He married the love of his life, Diana N. Rugg, and for over 40 years, they were true soulmates. Together they formed a beautiful blended family of 6 children. They shared countless adventures, especially in retirement — hitting the road in their RV, chasing sunrises, and making memories everywhere they went. Monte also became a devoted early-morning golfer, often teeing off before most people had even hit snooze.
Monte had a legendary sense of humor. He always had a witty comeback or a perfectly timed joke. As you left his house, you’d hear his classic send-off: “Keep it under 90.” He lit up every room he walked into — not just with his grin, but with his energy, charm, and kindness.
He was a man who served others quietly and without hesitation. He gave his time, his resources, and his heart freely. You never had to wonder where you stood with Monte — he was real, generous, and steady as they come.
Monte is survived by his wife, Diana; his children Joni Jenson (Greg), Cherie Sears (Bryan), Trina Thornley (Brian), Cami Blackham (Don), Sonya Bankowski (Kris), and Wayne Nielson (Cheryl); 12 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren who will never forget Grandpa’s jokes, hugs, and open-door heart. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Robins (Jeff).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Dorothy Rugg; his son, Gary Rugg; and his sisters, Bonnie Mullins and Patricia Child.
Monte lived with purpose, loved with his whole heart, and made life a little lighter for all of us. His laugh, his lessons, and his legacy will carry on — in every round of golf at sunrise, every road trip memory, and every time someone tells you to “keep it under 90.”
