Shirley Jean Allison (née Poulton)1941 – 2025

Shirley Jean Allison’s remarkable life journey came to a close on June 10, 2025, at the age of 84. A woman of warmth, curiosity, and adventure, Shirley lived a life stitched together by love, laughter, boundless energy, and a smile that brightened every room.

Born in Oakland, California, Shirley grew up surrounded by family and friends—many of which spanned a lifetime. She graduated from Piedmont High School and followed her love of the outdoors and learning to UC Davis. There, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and graduated as valedictorian. It was also where she met Gary Allison, and the two embarked on additional adventures, marrying in June 1963.

Shirley began her professional life at the Dairy Council of California before relocating with Gary to Boulder, Colorado. There, they built a home and raised their two sons, Brian and Tim. Shirley embraced the Colorado mountain lifestyle with gusto—skiing in the winter, golfing in the summer, big game hunting, and water-skiing with effortless enthusiasm well into her seventies. Lake Powell held a special place in her heart, offering sun-soaked memories and outlandish fishing stories with family and friends. Shirley also embraced Gary’s love of flying by learning to land his twin-engine plane in the event of an emergency! The two of them embarked on many flights throughout the Southwest, Mountain West, and into Mexico and Canada.

In the mid-1980s, Shirley and Gary’s journey took them to La Cañada and later Aptos, California, where Shirley began a new chapter in real estate. Eventually, they returned to Colorado and settled in Louisville, where life grew even richer with the presence of three beloved grandchildren, with whom they spent countless hours and vacations.

Retirement brought fresh adventures. Shirley and Gary made their home in Washington City, Utah, where they continued their cherished visits to Lake Powell, explored the beauty of the Southwest, and made many trips to Park City to see Kathryn, Brian and the grandkids. Shirley also renewed her passion for painting, becoming a prolific and inspired artist, whose work reflected her love of color, perspective, and the beauty of nature.

Following Gary’s passing in 2022, Shirley entered her final chapter with courage and grace, moving to Legacy Village of St. George. There, she quickly formed many new friendships, continued her painting, and embraced simple joys—long walks, shared meals, and heartfelt conversations.

Known for her radiant, ever-present smile, interest in people, and unwavering kindness, Shirley touched all who knew her.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents at Legacy for welcoming Shirley so warmly and making her feel truly at home.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Gary; her beloved son, Tim; her brothers, Larry and Donald; and her parents, Cora and Raymond. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Brian (Kathryn); grandchildren, Robbie, Jack, and Meskele; her brother, Bill (Zoe); and a large circle of friends, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Shirley also leaves behind a rich legacy of memories, photographs, and artwork that continue to tell the story of a life of imagination and adventure.
