Stanley Ross Phipps,70, (known in his younger years as "Grand Slam Stan" or "Stan the Man"), of Wellsville, Utah, left to join his loving mom and dad after a 7 month long amazingly courageous battle with cancer on Oct 3, 2010.

Stan was born on July 31, 1940. He was born in Modesto, California to Dorothy Marie Crawford and Jess Phipps of Oklahoma. He had a loving sister, Lois, and a big brother, Jesse. He always took great pride in his parents' humble beginning in their marriage as share croppers in Oklahoma, as well as their courageous exodus to California during the Dust Bowl days in the late 1930's. He would say, "If you ever saw the movie Grapes of Wrath with Henry Fonda—well that was my mom, dad, grandma, aunt and uncle. They would load all of their worldly possessions on their Marmon car and they had hardly a cent in their pockets.” And then he would say “Why my first home was a tent!", and he had a picture to prove it!

He met his eternal sweetheart, Garlande, when they were sophomores in high school. She cheered him on thru their high school years as he played football, basketball, and baseball games. He was very passionate about sports and always gave them his fullest efforts. He also loved to fish and go deer and elk hunting. They married August 15, 1958 shortly after their graduation and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple on November 9,1963.

Stan and Garlande were both baptized into the LDS church when they were 21 years old. On the way to their baptism Stan told his wife, "I want you to know that I am NOT going into this halfway-its all the way or nothing!" That's the way he lived his life as a Latter Day Saint. He was always faithful and diligent in all his callings and in his life. He served 3 stake missions and a full time mission with his wife in the Oregon Eugene Mission.

His biggest focus during life was family. He and Garlande had four children. As they raised their family they rarely would go anywhere without them. They were his life. He coached their athletic teams for years and was always there for games, events, and activities. After his retirement from Pacific Gas and Electric in Redding, California after 30 years they moved to Wellsville, Utah.

During the final days of his last battle he constantly asked for his family to be near offering words of love and advice. His devotion to God and his family never wavered.

He was proceeded in death by his mom and dad.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Garlande Ann (Sims) Phipps; four children, Steven Ross (Donna), Mark Denton (Louisa), Kimberly Ann (Nathan), and Gregg Matthew (Robin). He is also survived by his sister Lois(Daryl) Howe, brother Jess(Carol) Phipps, 22 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, with two more on the way.

The family would like to thank Jan at Integrity Hospice and the nurses at the Logan Cancer Center, especially Jaydele, for the wonderful care they gave to Stan.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 6 th , 2010, at 3:00 pm at the Wellsville 3 rd Ward, 660 S. 100 W. Wellsville, UT. Interment will be at the Wellsville City Cemetery.
