Steven Albert Berger, age 84, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026. He was born November 24, 1941, and was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he attended South High School. It was there that he met his high school sweetheart, Sally Foy. The two were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on October 12, 1961, beginning a devoted marriage that spanned more than six decades.
Following high school, Steve served in boot camp and later in the Army Reserves. He went on to build a long and successful career in the construction industry. Steve began his career with Berger Incorporated as a lather, where he quickly became respected for his skill, hard work, and knowledge of the trade. He had a natural ability to teach and was always willing to share what he knew, helping many others learn the craft and develop their own skills.
As his career progressed, Steve became an estimator and project manager, taking on greater responsibilities and becoming an important part of Berger Incorporated's success and growth. He was a talented problem-solver, a natural leader, and someone people could count on. But his contribution to the company went far beyond his job title. Steve helped create the environment and spirit that made Berger a special place to work. His humor, personality, friendship, and genuine interest in others made him well-liked and respected by those around him.
Steve had a love for the outdoors and an adventurous spirit. He enjoyed skiing, hunting, camping, and especially jeeping in Moab. He rarely missed Easter Jeep Safari in Moab every year. He loved being outdoors, exploring new places, and spending time with family and friends. He was also an avid runner and completed many races, both big and small, including the 1993 New York City Marathon.
Steve and Sally made their home in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, where they raised their two daughters. They later moved to Draper, Utah and following Steve's retirement, the two embraced a new chapter of life together, selling their home and purchasing an RV. They traveled extensively throughout the western United States, frequently visiting Oregon, California, and New Mexico. They later spent several years in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they purchased an RV pad and made many happy memories.
Eventually, Steve and Sally settled in St. George, Utah, where they lived for the past 15 years. Even after settling in St. George, they continued traveling to many of their favorite destinations. Steve especially enjoyed their trips and adventures together, in particular, a quick trip down to Vegas for good food and slot machines.
Steve will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, determination, love of the outdoors, and devotion to his loving wife, Sally. He lived an active life. He was always doing something whether it was working in the yard or washing and waxing his cars or RVs. He had many talents and a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy to those around him. He could play the harmonica and banjo, perform yo-yo tricks, and enjoyed memorizing and reciting poems. His playful nature, unique talents, and ability to entertain others were just a few of the qualities that made him so memorable and loved by his family and friends.
We are happy he gets to be with Sally again.
We send our deepest gratitude to Snow Canyon Retirement Community and Zion’s Way Home Health & Hospice Care for all their love and support taking care of Steve the last few months.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally Foy Berger; His parents, Benjamin and Constance Berger; His siblings, Elmer (Nelda) Berger, Lewis (Nancy) Berger, and Colleen (Jim) Cushing.
He is survived by his daughters, Jill (Dave) Burns of Erda, Utah, and Melanie (Kris) Jewkes of St. George, Utah; his grandchildren, Cody (Stephanie) Burns, Dallin (Stacie) Burns, Morgan (Mitch) Woodhead, Sara (TJ) McPherson, Mallorie Jewkes, Kelsie (Juan) Jewkes, and Jo Jewkes; 10 great-grandchildren; and Steve’s sister, Jane (Gary) Brough.
