Wendell Nash

d. October 27, 2010

Wendell Nash, 90, passed away Wednesday night 11:45 of congestive heart
disease. Born April 27, 1920 in Vernal Utah to George and Elizabeth Nash,
Wendell was the fourth son in a family of four brothers and a single sister. Of his
natal family only baby sister “Lola Marie Nash Ottley” 89 survives. Wendell
is also survived by 14 nephews and nieces (only niece Jo Ann Newcome has
predeceased him.

Wendell lived, for most of his life in Vernal, Utah with mother Elizabeth and
brother Alvin.

Wendell's father, George Nash, beloved local sheep herder and storyteller, died when Wendell was 20. Shortly after his father's death WWII erupted

During the early 1940s, when Brothers Ray, Roy, Alvin and
Sister Lola joined the armed services to fight the war, Wendell stayed in
Vernal to sustain the family farm and support his widowed mother Elizabeth.

Twin brothers Ray and Roy and Sister married and started families
promptly after the war, Alvin and Wendell stayed on the farmstead with
with “Mother” Elizabeth.

Although Wendell and Alvin lived and died bachelors both played prominent roles in the, adventures, education and rearing of nieces Elaine “Amanda” (63), Jo Ann (deceased), Moni (62),
Toni ( 60), Dawn Michelle "Missy" (51) and Lola Mae (47), and nephews, Ron (55), Bret (52), and Thomas (43),as well as Bobby, Neddy, Mark, Lee, Ray Lamar and Cylde, who all count memories of their experiences with
Wendell during their formative years among their most cherished.

Ray, Roy and Lola's children fondly recount how Uncle Wendell “used catch us up spin
us around, throw us, laughing, into the air”; “read to us tirelessly
dramatizing the roles, paying us nickels and dimes to memorize the poetry
of Auden and Blake”; “he used matchsticks and beans to teach us basic
math.” He loved to load us up into his maroon Hudson and drive full speed
into the aspen groves and mountains, singing “‘Twas on the Isle of Capri
that I met her” sotto voce tone deaf, that was ecstasy, recalls one niece.

Wendell’s lifelong self-directed reading and research of History &
politics paralleled the formal education of brother Alvin (who obtained a
B.S. Political Science and J.D. in the late 1940s & early 1950s) and,
during their lives, the two amassed a sizeable library, the contents of
which they shared and debated with all comers.

Wendell’s personal, passion for history, political debate, for his family,
his fiery temper, his irreverent and relentless sense of humor, his
defiance of hypocrisy, unparalleled work ethic, his colorful vocabulary and
(except for very recently) his physical prowess (hiking10 miles a
day through the St. George foothills with Alvin until a disabling car
accident in 2007) all endear him to the friends and family who survive him.

The devotion of Sister Lola, family members, along with the dedicated care
of Rocky Mountain Home Care and Hospice supported Wendell during his final
days until his death in his sleep Wednesday October 27th, 2010.

Funeral Services will be held Monday November 1 ST at 3 pm with a viewing at 2 pm at the Green Valley 6 th Ward Chapel 124 N. Valley View Drive.
