Douglas Jones

March 31, 1941 — September 17, 2022

Enterprise, Utah

Douglas Frank Jones (81) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 17, 2022. in Enterprise, Utah.

Doug was born March 31, 1941 in Cedar City, Utah to Delmar Fackrell Jones and Kate Bentley Jones.

He grew up in Enterprise, Utah on the Bentley family farm where he learned from a young age the value of hard work and a job done right. He graduated from Enterprise High School in 1959.

He married his sweetheart Lorraine Melessa Jones in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 16, 1964, and they were sealed for eternity in the St. George, Utah Temple on May 15, 1965. A month later, they purchased their forever home in Enterprise where they raised their son and six daughters. He worked hard his entire life to provide for his family.

He worked on farms for Zuckermans, Alma Holt,  and Elmo Farnsworth for several years each. He also served in the National Guard from 1963 to 1969. Doug started his career with the railroad in 1969 as a gandy dancer.  After a back surgery, he started a new position as a district truck driver. He retired from the railroad in 2002 at age 60. Doug also ran cattle with his brother, Clark, for decades to provide extra income and beef for his family. Even into the last week of his life, he was still going to the farm to do chores and feed horses with his daughter, Shelly.

He was right at home when he and Lorraine served as missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the Church’s Cleveland Ranch in the Las Vegas Nevada Mission. They worked and lived on the ranch near north Spring Valley, Nevada from June 2006 to June 2007, helping to raise cattle and support the nearby community and branch of the Church.

Throughout his life, Doug served as a faithful home teacher.  He also served as a counselor in the Elders’ Quorum presidency, Sunday School president, and Cub Scout Den leader.

It has been said that people should teach by example—and when necessary, use words. Doug’s children say that he rarely felt the need to use words, but they learned volumes from his example of hard work and integrity.  He was a good man, true to his convictions and full of patience (except with bad horses, unruly cattle, and cow dogs that wouldn’t listen). He sowed some wild oats in his youth, but once he decided to quit smoking and drinking he quit cold turkey and never went back.  His family will miss his quiet, steady presence and big bear hugs.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Delmar and Kate Bentley Jones and his brother Richard Kenneth Jones.

Doug is survived by his wife Lorraine, children Delanie and Todd Hathaway (Nephi, Utah), Toni and Steven Gardner (St. George, Utah), Liz and Scott Lovell (St. George, Utah), Shelly and Ammon Carter (Enterprise, Utah), Carolyn and Kent Nobis (North Richland Hills, Texas), Frank and Jesse Jones (Bend, Oregon), Susan and Danny Webb (St. George, Utah), 25 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren with another arriving in November, and his siblings Clark and Janet Jones (Enterprise, Utah) and Joyce and David Cowley (Enterprise, Utah).
