Gene (D. Eugene) Moore (99)

Gene graduated from this life peacefully in his home surrounded by his children on November 27, 2021. Born October 1, 1922 in Rigby, ID to Clarence Eugene Moore and Luella Adams Moore. He was the fifth child of a family of seven siblings. He was raised on a self-sufficient dry farm where there was no running water, power, or modern conveniences. Gene’s faith in God’s plan and a deep love and appreciation for Jesus Christ guided all his decisions in life. From a young age until his death, he had the gift of being able to make people feel wonderful as he strived to emulate the teachings of the Savior.

At age 19 just before the US entered WWII, he was called to serve a Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was assigned to labor in the Spanish Speaking American Mission. His love of languages, especially Spanish continued throughout his lifetime. Gene was asked to report to the mission home on December 8, 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed. He served as a missionary for 2.5 years mostly on the southern border of Texas. After his mission he became a radio officer for the United States Merchant Marines serving in the Atlantic and Pacific onboard high octane fuel tankers.

He married Bonnie Folland November 25, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. Bonnie passed away on December 9, 2018, and they would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving Day this year. When Gene asked her father for her hand in marriage, her father accepted only after Gene promised to always take care of her. He fulfilled his promise with love to the very last day. They have five children, Melody, Larry (Carol), Brent (Robyn), Scott (Ninon), and Ryan (Melissah). He has twelve grandchildren, soon to be 20 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren from Hawaii to Florida. Gene and Bonnie eventually built their dream home in Mt Olympus in Salt Lake City where a sign hung that reads, “These are the Good Old Days” as their posterity was taught to love and live well in the moment.

Gene was a creative entrepreneur and organized multiple businesses in several industries. He was enthusiastic about life, and an optimistic thinker. He loved people and always found ways to uplift others. Gene was always smiling and eager to help anyone even in his final days. He could fix anything and would try anything including teaching himself to use a computer in his 80’s. His positive attitude allowed him to keep up with the many changes he witnessed throughout his lifetime.

Gene was able to live independently into his 100th year thanks to a healthy lifestyle, good neighbors, and his son Scott. His devotion to his mental and physical health was remarkable! He memorized long poems and would recite the alphabet backwards. Gene engaged in healthy eating habits and aerobic exercise even before they were widely understood. He juiced daily for over forty years and exercised six days a week until two weeks prior to his passing. What an example to us all. He is truly an amazing man!

He is survived by children, grandchildren, and many wonderful extended family members including his beloved brothers Charles (Margy), and Keith.
