James Gephart

December 13, 1933 — February 6, 2023

St. George, Utah

James was born on December 13, 1933 at the family house in Coshocton Ohio.  He was the 7th child of Asa Clifford Gephart and Ida Bell Cox.

As a youth Jim had a paper route, he dug up potatoes for 5 cents a bucket, and played football. And let's not forget he walked to school in the snow, up hill both ways, or so he said.

In 1952 he enlisted in the Navy. He served for 4 years during the Korean war.

In spring of 1953 he was set up on a date with his future wife.  On July 1, 1953 Jim married his sweetheart, Lorraine Millie Acalin in San Pedro, California.

While serving in the Navy, Jim and his bride were sent to Japan.  Here is where their first child, Sallie Beth, was born. Between Sallie’s and their second child, Candice Lynn's birth, he finished his military career.

Jim and Lorraine decided to raise their family in San Pedro, California. He worked for the City of Los Angeles as a rough carpenter, working many years on the docks of the LA Harbor.

About 1960, Jim and Lorraine became Foster parents and had a care facility. Through the years, they had dozens of children come through their home.  And many still call them Mom and Dad.  In 1963 they adopted James Charles and in 1968, Shelly Marie.

Jim was always busy. He always had a project to do. He loved working with his hands and being outside. Not long after retiring, Jim and Lorraine moved back to Jim’s roots in Coshocton, Ohio.  Here he remodeled the house they bought.  They stayed there until 2014 when they headed to the warmth of the desert in Saint George, Utah.

Jim was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a faithful member always ready to give a helping hand. He served in many callings, including high priest group leader, ward missionary, and branch president.

Jim was a kind and gentle person who many will miss. He leaves behind his wife, Lorraine, of nearly 70 years.  His four children, Sallie Stewart, Candice (Doug) Matthew,  James (DeAnn) Gephart, and Shelly (Steve) Adam.  Also, fifteen grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Jim was preceded in death his parents, all 7 siblings, and by 2 granddaughters, Ariel and Sara.
